Trout in the Classroom - Field Experience
In partnership with: Trout Unlimited
The Trout in the Classroom Field Experience connects classroom trout rearing with the living watershed systems where trout survive and thrive. Hosted at the Sedona Rainbow Trout Farm and the OCEAN Outdoor Classroom along Oak Creek, the program allows students to experience trout biology, hatchery science, and watershed ecology firsthand.
Schools may participate at multiple stages of their classroom program—before, during, or after raising trout—to deepen students’ understanding of aquatic ecosystems and conservation.
Program Overview
The OCEAN Trout in the Classroom Field Experience serves as the real-world extension of Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom initiative. After learning about trout in their classrooms, students visit a working hatchery and riparian watershed where they can connect their learning with the ecosystems that support trout survival.
Students engage with hatchery systems, trout biology, watershed science, and conservation principles through a structured, hands-on field experience.
Programs may be scheduled:
-
Before classroom incubation to introduce hatchery science and trout life cycles
-
During classroom rearing to deepen understanding of fish biology and water systems
-
After completion of the classroom program to simulate trout stocking and explore natural habitat
-
This progression helps students complete the full educational journey—from incubation and care to ecosystem integration.
Program Experience
Students participate in a station-based field experience designed to reinforce Trout in the Classroom curriculum.
Activities may include:
-
Guided hatchery systems tour at Sedona Rainbow Trout Farm
-
Exploration of trout life cycles and fish health management
-
Trout stocking simulation and discussion of habitat requirements
-
Overview of Arizona’s native trout species and conservation efforts
-
Stream ecology instruction along Oak Creek
-
Introduction to aquatic insects, food webs, and watershed dynamics
-
Discussion of environmental stewardship and conservation responsibility
Learning Outcomes
Participants develop a deeper understanding of:
-
Trout biology and life cycles
-
Hatchery science and aquaculture systems
-
Riparian ecosystems and watershed health
-
Native trout conservation in Arizona
-
The role of stewardship in protecting aquatic environments
-
By connecting classroom learning with real ecosystems, students gain a stronger appreciation for the relationship between trout, water, and habitat.
