OCEAN - Oak Creek Trout Camp

Oak Creek Trout Camp is a two-day immersive conservation camp designed for middle school students interested in fisheries, ecology, and environmental science. Hosted at the Sedona Rainbow Trout Farm and along Oak Creek Canyon, the camp provides hands-on exploration of trout biology, hatchery science, aquatic insects, and watershed ecosystems.

Through extended field learning and small-group instruction, students gain deeper scientific understanding while building outdoor skills and a stronger connection to conservation.

Program Overview

Oak Creek Trout Camp expands upon OCEAN’s field-based curriculum through a two-day immersive learning experience. Participants explore the biological systems that support trout and healthy watersheds while engaging in applied field research, outdoor skill development, and conservation learning.

Enrollment is intentionally limited to small cohorts to ensure individualized instruction and meaningful engagement with both scientific concepts and outdoor experiences.

Students participate in guided instruction, field exploration, and hands-on activities that connect hatchery science with the natural ecosystems of Oak Creek Canyon.

Program Experience

Participants engage in a wide range of applied science and conservation activities, including:

  • Guided hatchery systems tour at Sedona Rainbow Trout Farm

  • Exploration of trout biology and life cycles

  • Advanced trout anatomy study and guided dissection

  • Introduction to aquatic insects and trout feeding behavior

  • Stream ecology exploration along Oak Creek

  • Macroinvertebrate sampling and identification

  • Fly fishing and traditional fishing instruction

  • Supervised fishing sessions connecting ecology with real-world experience

  • Habitat observation and watershed discussions

  • Structured journaling and group reflection

The two-day format allows students to move beyond introductory exposure and engage more deeply with the science of aquatic ecosystems.

Learning Outcomes

Participants develop a deeper understanding of:

  • Trout biology and anatomical systems

  • Hatchery operations and fish management

  • Aquatic insects and freshwater food webs

  • Stream ecology and watershed dynamics

  • Fly fishing and traditional fishing techniques

  • Environmental stewardship and conservation practices

The camp encourages curiosity, scientific thinking, and respect for aquatic environments.
